Mystic Bookkeeper is the crafting NPC for a chain of books and the Basic Rod. The community wiki places him behind a blue-roofed building on Pirate Island in the First Sea, near the Viridans docks in the Second Sea and atop a tower at The Shallow in the Third Sea. Patch Crazy independently places the First Sea NPC near the Clown Boss and a nearby building.
For a first fishing rod, prepare ten Rusted Scrap and thirty Logs. That recipe appears in both the NPC research and Patch Crazy’s fishing guide, making it better supported than the higher book recipes. Bring the materials for the item you actually want to craft; the rod recipe is separate from the progression of books and does not require completing that whole chain first.
The books form a dependency chain. Fate Book is an ingredient in Essence Book, Essence Book is used in Fortune Tales, and Fortune Tales is used in Chronicles Lore. If Chronicles Lore is your target, work backward through those recipes before spending the preceding books elsewhere. Our practical recommendation is to reserve each intermediate book alongside the materials for the next step, so a completed early craft is not accidentally treated as a spare item.
The later recipes also draw on different activities: Essence Book uses Fresh Fish and Leather, Fortune Tales includes Dragon Scale, and Chronicles Lore asks for Hydra’s Tail, Heart of Sea, Aqua Gem and Sea Artifacts. The recipe table keeps those quantities attached to each book rather than combining them into a misleading single-stage cost. Bookkeeper’s NPC page and the separate Basic Rod entry disagree on rod tradability in the research snapshot. We preserve that disagreement and avoid using a trade promise as an alternative crafting route. Choose the nearest documented NPC location, then use the exact recipe for your target item.
